Is It Just Me?

‘Is It Just Me?’ uses self-portraiture to explore the topic of women’s safety outside the home, reflecting the fear Maya experiences every day when leaving the house. It focuses on the clothes choices she makes to avoid unwanted attention and the items she carries for self-protection. Throughout her life Maya has heard advice on how not to get hurt outside. Trying to remember all of this, trying to do everything right, her thoughts become overwhelming. Are there really ways of avoiding being attacked outside? Will she make it home tonight?
