Relou

“Relou” is a photographic series that explores the burden of street harassment, particularly on women, in France. These pictures depict the ingenious ways that victims use to try to tackle their fear and street insecurity. The name of this project comes from the French word “lourd” meaning heavy but is altered through the “verlan” slang to become “relou” which changes its meaning to annoying. Verlan is a common way of colloquialising words in French, where the altered words can sometimes take on an slightly different meaning. The name describes how street harassment is both a heavy burden on victims and annoying at the same time.
