Ceremonial Light
For my major project I am designing a ceremonial light for the science fiction film Blade Runner. The ceremonial light can be used in times of reminiscing, or as an object that invites people to moments of togetherness. Its design serves as a future alternative of the campfire but can be used in more urban environments.

I investigated various cultures of death and remembrance from around the world and discovered that each form of ritual had a source of light and warmth involved in the practice. This experience taught me how to combine different cultural references to create a prop that is convincing and totally unique.

Visual research methods and mood boards were used to help develop the art direction. Ideation sketches were used to show the form and construction of the design proposal. Some sketches were drawn on kraft paper which led to more realistic renders and feel pulled from a different time.

Storyboards and concept art was used to explore the context and scenario. These designs contributed to refining the style, atmosphere, cinematography and directly inspiring certain elements in the film. Even if some concept art was not used in the final film, it fed the process.

The making process included a wide range of old and new building methods. Most complex components were 3D Printed while simple parts were laser cut and sanded. This was then finishes with a variety of materials including Polyfilla, metallic spray paint, and acrylic wash making the prop realistic.

The ritual combines traditions found Scandinavian and Asian culture. In Scandinavia, the concept ‘friluftsliv’ is about sending time outdoors around a campfire, whereas in Chinese traditions, people will burn joss paper when worshiping ancestors or during funerals. Both these rituals create a prop that feels ahead of its time.

The prop features a number of components and small accessories that can be set up as part of the ritual. These hand props allow the actor to interact with the main prop in different ways. Each prop has a variety material and details to make it feel believable.

For this film, most of the shots were recorded in the Necropolis in Glasgow as it provided excellent background due to its brutalist gothic architecture, adding to the Blade Runner world building. Some shots with moving parts were stop motion animated showing that the prop can function in the real world.

One of the main features when burning incense paper allows the flame to change colour, changing the mood and atmosphere of the setting. In film, it is important to consider photography and cinematography as it allows the story to be told through light and colour.

The Final prop was fully function with legs, joints and pistons moving. For film editing purposes, an LED light source was added inside the cone where VFX can add flames, fire embers and smoke effects.
