Away From Home
Children’s storybook about the experience of migration. This book includes activities to engage parents and children about the topic and teach them about migration and diversity in a fun, positive way.
Inspired by personal real-life experiences of people who have moved away from home as young children, explaining the struggles they went through while adjusting to an unknown environment.

The exhibition space has been set up with a theme of the book throughout.

Front cover of the children’s book, introducing the main character, Birdie.

The start of the book includes a fun pop up of the bird family in a nest, adding a fun, unexpected and engaging element to the book.

Throughout the book, Birdie takes us on a journey of finding a new home.

Activities in the book follow the story and engage children to help Birdie through his journey.

Birdie shows us the experience of joining a new school, and not knowing the language to be able to communicate.

This book aims to teach children about migration, diversity and remind them that we are all same but different, and that’s what makes each one of us unique.

Post box for “postcards back home” is an element taken out of the story in the book, made into a real life, interactive post box. The postcards displayed have been filled out by individuals who experienced immigration at a young age. The messages written show us how they felt at the time.
